Creating the outdoors indoors
A large part of my work is producing photography to show building materials and systems in use. This usually means visiting recently completed projects and finding ways of showing the product to best effect. However, sometimes a product is so new it hasn’t been used in any scheme. That is when it becomes necessary to build a set. In preparation for their new catalog and with deadline approaching fast, I joined Brett Landscape & Building Products at their factory in Yorkshire for an intense few days of creating the outdoors indoors.
Whilst I capture the images a team of three construct sets in four corners of a large indoor area. As one set is complete I move on to photograph the next whilst the team strike that set and start to build the next in its place. In it an intensive but very productive few days in my annual programme.
Set photography more usually means creating the indoors indoors for interior design products. Creating the outdoors in a dusty corner of a working factory brings some real challenges but I love the experience of working in a team and enjoy getting together with them every year as catalogue time approaches.
