When commissioned to photograph the built environment there are thirteen things I strive for . . .

- Impart a sense of place / the feeling that a building evokes
- Emphasise the human dimension
- Investigate detail and textures
- Show how a building works
- Create tantalising glimpses of other worlds
- Produce images with a lyrical intensity
- In older buildings, convey time as well as form
- Have an empathy for materials, crafts and traditions
- Segment larger environments into discrete areas and create simplicity by paring down the subject
- Understand and articulate the intention of designer or architect
- Impart a sense of drama
